Ⅲ.Reading Comprehension (20 points)
Directions: Read thefollowing passage and then answer questions 41 to 60 by selecting the best onefrom A, B, C and D. Indicate your answers on the Answer Sheet.
It was on the 28thof July, which I believe was a Wednesday, that I visited my father for thefirst time during his illness and for the last time in his life. The momentthat I saw him I knew why I had put off this visit so long. I had told mymother that I did not want to see him because I hated him. But this was nottrue. It was only that I had hated him and I wanted to hold on to this hatred.I did not want to look on him as a ruin: it was not a ruin I had hated.I imagine that one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly isbecause they sense, once hate is gone, that they will be forced to deal withpain.
We traveled outto him, his older sister and myself, to what seemed to be the very end of avery Long Island. It was hot and dusty and we wrangled, my aunt and I,all the way out, over the fact that I had recently begun to smoke and, as shesaid, to give myself airs. But I knew that she wrangled with me because shecould not bear to face the fact of her brother’s dying. Neither could I endurethe reality of her despair, her unstated bafflement as to what hadhappened to her brother’s life, and her own. So we wrangled and I smoked andfrom time to time she fell into a heavy reverie. Covertly, Iwatched her face, which was the face of an old woman; it had fallen in. theeyes were sunken and lightless: soon she would be dying, too.
In my childhood—ithad not been so long ago—I had thought her beautiful. She had been quick-wittedand quick-moving and very generous with all the children and each of her visitshad been an event. At one time one of my brothers and myself had thought ofrunning away to live with her. Now she could no longer produce out of herhandbag some unexpected and yet familiar delight. She made me feel pity and revulsionand fear. It was awful to realize that she no longer caused me to feelaffection. The closer we came to the hospital the more querulous shebecame and at the same time, naturally, grew more dependent on me. Between pityand guilt and fear I began to feel that there was another me trapped in myskull like a jack-in-the-box who might escape my control at any moment and fillthe air with screaming.
She began to crythe moment we entered the room and she saw him lying there, all shriveled andstill, like a little black monkey. The great, gleaming apparatus which fed himand would have compelled him to be still even if he had been able to movebrought to mind, not beneficence, but torture; the tubes entering his arm mademe think of pictures I had seen when a child, of Gulliver, tied down by thepygmies on that island. My aunt wept and, wept, there was a whistling sound inmy father’s throat; nothing was said: he could not speak. I wanted to take hishand, to say something. But I do not know what I could have said, even if hecould have heard me. He was not really in that room with us, he bad at lastreally embarked on his journey; and though my aunt told me that he saidhe was going to meet Jesus. I did not hear anything except that whistling inhis throat. The doctor came back and we left into that unbearable train again, and home. In the morning came the telegram saving that he was dead. Then thehouse was suddenly full of relatives, friends, hysteria, and confusion and Iquickly left my mother and the children to the care of those impressive women, who, in Negro communities at least, automatically appear at times of bereavementarmed with lotions proverbs and patience and an ability to cook. I wentdowntown. By the time I returned later the same day, my mother had been carriedto the hospital and the baby had been born.

Fun is hard tohave.
Fun is a rarejewel.
Somewhere alongthe line people got the modern idea that fun was there for the asking, thatpeople deserve fun, that if we didn’t have a little fun every day we would turninto (sakes alive) puritans.
“Was it fun?”became the question that overshadowed all other questions: good questions like:Was it moral? Was it kind? Was it honest? Was it beneficial? Was it generous? Was it necessary? And (my favorite) was it selfless?
When thepleasure got to be the main thing, the fun fetish was sure to follow.Everything was supposed to be fun. If it wasn’t fun, then by Jove we were goingto make it fun, or else.
Think of all thethings that got the reputation of being fun. Family outings were supposed to befun. Sex, was supposed to be fun. Education was supposed to be fun. Church wassupposed to be fun. Staying fit was supposed to be fun.
Just to makesure that everybody knew how much fun we were having, we put happy faces onflunking test papers, dirty bumpers, sticky refrigerator doors, bathroomminors.
If a kid, looking at his very happy parents traipsing through that very happy DisneyWorld, said. “This ain’t fun, ma.” his ma’s heart sank. She wondered where shehad gone wrong. Everybody told her what fun family outings to Disney Worldwould be. Golly gee, what was the matter?
Fun got to besuch a big thing that everybody started to look for more and more thrillingways to supply it. One way was to step up the level of danger or licentiousnessor alcohol or drug consumption so that you could be sure that, no matter what, you would manage to have a little fun. Television commercials brought a lot offun and fun-loving folks into the picture. Everything that people in thosecommercials did looked like fun: taking Digital snapshots, swilling beer, buying insurance, mopping the floor bowling, taking aspirin. We all wished. I’msure. that we could have half as much as those rough-and-ready guys around thelocker room, flicking each other with towers and pouring champagne. The morecommercials people watched, the more they wondered when the fun would start intheir own lives. It was pretty depressing.
Big occasions weresupposed to be fun. Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter were obviously supposedto be fun. Your wedding day was supposed to be fun. Your honeymoon was supposedto be the epitome of fundom. And so we ended up going through every Big Eventwe ever celebrated, waiting for the fun to start.
It occurred tome, while I was sitting waiting for the fun to start that not much is and thatI should tell you just in case you’re worried about your fun capacity.
I don’t mean toput a damper on things. I just mean we ought to treat fun reverently. It is amystery. It cannot be caught like a virus. It cannot be trapped like an animal. The good of mirth is paying us back for all those of thinking fun waseverywhere by refusing to come to our party. I don’t want to blaspheme funanymore. When fun comes in on little dancing feet you probably won’t beexpecting it. In fact, I bet it comes when you’re doing your duty, your job oryour work. It may even come on a Tuesday.
I remember oneday, long ago, on which I had an especially good time. Pam Davis and I walkedto the College Village drug store one Saturday morning to buys some candy. Wewere about 12 years old (fun age). She got her Bit-O-Henry. I got my maltedmilk balls, chocolate stars, Chunkys, and a small bag of M & M’s. Westarted back to her house. I was going to spend the night. We had the whole dayto look forward to. We had plenty of candy. It was a long way to Pam’s housebut every time we got weary Pam would put her hand over her eyes, scan thehorizon like a sailor and say, “Oughta reach home by nightfall,” at which pointthe two of us would laugh until we thought we couldn’t stand it another minute. Then after we got clam, she’d say it again. You should have been there. It wasthe kind of day and friendship and occasion that made me deeply regretful thatI had to grow up.
It was fun.

Ⅱ.Composition (35 points)
Quality of Life is Much More Than a Job
Nowadays, mostyoung people view a job mainly as a way of making money, and hold that the moremoney a job can make, the better it is. In some way, money has become thecriterion of life quality. Although it is quite reasonable to pursue materialcomfort and monetary success, there are more important aspects concerningquality of life. For my part, quality of life is much more than a job.
First, a life ofhigh quality should be one of constant progress. By accomplishing the tasks, wemay find ourselves capable of solving many problems. When being challenged bytougher assignments, we can learn a lot more. Thus, the process of work is aprocess of challenging ourselves, making constant progress, and improvingourselves. Moreover, our horizons can be broadened when we cope withcomplicated situations, and it maybe has something to do with the formation ofour bettering personality, such as making us strong-minded. These are moreimportant than material success.
Second, a lifeof high quality should be one in which we can realize our own personal value. Inother words, we do a job to fulfill ourselves, apart from earning money. Inthis way, we can feel that we are useful to the society and our existence ismeaningful. By making considerable devotion to the society can we get therespect from other people and enjoy a kind of satisfaction.
Third, a life ofhigh quality should be one which consists of social activities andcommunication. In the process of doing jobs, many opportunities to contact withother people are available. We are provided with occasions where we meet morepeople and take part in more social activities. Social life, which is a quiteessential part of our life, makes our life more colorful.
All in all, alife of high quality should be one in which we can make constant progress, realize our own personal value and be involved in social activities andcommunication, rather than focus on how much money we can make. Thoughfinancial success can be important to some extent, it can not overweigh someother spiritual aspects in life. There are more goals for us to pursue in ourlife.
