M: Well, I’d love to share with you my personal opinions on citylife and life in small towns. I grew up in a small town until I was 18 and thenmoved to a big city, so I have experienced the good and bad sides of both. Inever thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. Afterten years of living in one, I can’t imagine ever living in a small town again.Surely small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms oftransport. In a small town, you have to own a car to make life comfortable. Youcan’t get around without one because there isn’t any kind of public transport.Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking, but there youhave a choice of taking public transport, which is cheaper than driving. So, ifyou don’t have a car, you’d better live in the city. I also love the excitinglife in big cities. I can always enjoy a lot of films, concerts, and otherwonderful shows. However, these things are not common in small towns. The finalthing I like about large cities is that you can meet different kinds of people. However, you seldom find such a variety of people in a smaller town. I thinkthat living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly becomedull. Of course, safety should be considered, and that’s one area where smalltowns are better than big cities. Still, I would rather be a bit more carefuland live in a large city than to feel safe but dull.

Larry first began diving when he was his daughter's age. Similarly, his father had taken him along on one of his expeditions. Since then, he hadnever looked back. Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one'spersonal life or in the general society. Progress indicates a person's abilityto change the way he is living at the moment. Progress must lead to a betterlife and a better way of doing things. All these, however, remain true only inso far as people want to accept technology and move forward by finding new andmore efficient ways of doing things.
However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the "good old days", efficiency comes witha price. When communication becomes more efficient, people are able to contactone another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish to. Theclick of a button allows people miles apart to talk or see each other withouteven leaving their homes. With the communication gadgets, such as mobile phonesand iPads, people often do not take the effort to visit one another personally.A personal visit carries with it the additional feature of having to be in theperson's presence for as long as the visit lasts. We cannot unnecessarilyexcuse ourselves or turn the other person off.
With efficiency also comes mass production. Such is thenature of factories and the success of industrialization today. Factories haveimproved efficiency. Unskillful tasks are left to machines and products arebetter made and produced with greater accuracy than any human hand could everhave done. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss ofthe personal touch when making these products. For example, many handicrafts(手工艺品) are now produced in a factory. Although this means thatsupply is better able to increase demand, now that the supply is quick andefficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality ofthe handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.
Nevertheless, we must not commit the mistake of analyzingprogress only from one point of view. In fact, progress has allowed traditionto keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that manyold products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is requiredfor old products to stay old.
It is people's attitude towards progress that causes thetype of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. Thereis no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people's attitude. Theworst effects of progress will fall on those who are unable to rethink theirattitudes and views of society. When we accept progress and adapt it to suitour needs, a new "past" is created.

“ ‘Youare clearing too much land,’ warned one old man. ‘The land is a living thing. It will hit back at you if you abuse it. ‘

Wheninternational aid is given, steps must be taken to ensure (确保)that the aid reaches thepeople for whom it is intended. The way to achieve this may not be simple. Itis very difficult for a nation to give help directly to people in anothernation. The United Nations Organization (UNO) could undertake to direct thedistribution of aid. Here however rises the problem of costs. Also tied withthis is time. Perhaps the UNO could set up a body of devoted men and women inevery country who can speedily distribute aid to victims of floods andearthquakes.
Morethan the help that one nation can give to another during a disaster, it wouldbe more effective to give other forms of help during normal times. A commonproverb says, “Give me a fish and I eat for day, teach me to fish and I eatfor a lifetime.” If we follow this wise saying, it would be right to teachpeople from less developed nations to take care of themselves. For example, acountry could share its technology with another. This could be in simple areaslike agriculture or in more complex areas like medical and health care or evenin building satellites. Even small country is able to help less developednations. Sometimes what is take for granted, like the setting up of a waterpurification plant or the administration of a school, could be useful forcountries which are looking about to solve common problems. It does not costmuch to share such simple things. Exchange students could be attached for anumber of months or years and learn the required craft while on the site. Theycan then take their knowledge back to their homelands and if necessary comeback form time to time to clear doubts or to update themselves. Such aid willbe truly helpful and there is no chance of it being temporary or of it fallinginto the wrong hands.
Manycountries run extensive courses in all sorts of skills. It will not cost muchto include deserving foreigners in these courses. Besides giving effective helpto the countries concerned, there is also the build-up of friendships toconsider. Giving direct help by giving materials may be effective in the shortrun and must continue to be given in the event of emergencies. However, in thelong run what is really effective would be the sharing of knowledge.
61. According to the author, how could international aid reach thevictims in time?
A. By solvingthe cost problems
B. By solvingthe transportation problems
C. By settingup a body of devoted people in every country.
D. By relyingon the direct distribution of the UNO.
62.What does the author try to express in the underlined sentence?
A. Providingfood is vital
B. Learning tofish is helpful
C. Teachingskills is essential
D. Lookingafter others is important.
63.The second paragraph is developed mainly ______.
A. by example
B. by process
C. bycomparison
D. by contrast
64.Which aid is likely to fall into the wrong hands?
A. A medicalteam.
B. An exchangeprogram.
C. A waterplant.
D. Financialsupport.
65.What can we infer about international aid from the passage?
A. It is facingdifficulties.
B. It isunnecessary during normal times

D. It hasgained support developed countries

Manypeople think that listening is a passive business. It is just the opposite.Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It isbecause they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do thework, that most people do not listen well.
Listeningwell also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part oflistening well is the rule known as ‘bracketing’. Bracketing includes thetemporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, toexperience as far as possible someone else’s world from the inside, steppinginto his or her shoes. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing,it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing thisacceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part ofhis or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way and the energyrequired for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by thewill to extend oneself for mutual growth.
Mostof the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our businessdealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we areusually doing is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mindand wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get theconversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways moresatisfactory to us. Many of us are far more interested in talking than inlistening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don’t want to hear.
Itwasn’t until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledgethat one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic(有疗效的) In about a quarter of thepatients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months ofpsychotherapy(心理疗法),before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There areseveral reasons for this phenomenon, buzt chief among them, I believe, was thepatient’s sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the firsttime in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.
66. The phrase “stepping into his or her shoes” in paragraph 2probably means ______.
A. preparing atopic list first
B. focusing onone’s own mind
C. directingthe talk to the desired results
D. experiencingthe speaker’s inside world
67.What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2?
A. How tolisten well.

D. Problems inlistening
68.According to the author, in communication people tend to ______.
A. listenactively
B. listenpurposefully
C. set asidetheir prejudices

69.According to the author, the patients improved mainly because ______.

Onemight expect that the ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bringnothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, arosy picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Everymonth sees the building of a new hotel somewhere, and every month another rock-boundPacific island is advertised as the “last paradise(天堂) on earth”.
However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things touristswant to enjoy. In those countries where there was a rush to make quick moneyout of sea-side holidays, over-crowded beaches and the concrete jungles ofendless hotels have begun to lose their appeal.
Thosecountries with little experience of tourism can suffer most. In recent years, Nepal set out to attract foreign visitors to fund developments in health and education. Itsforests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as onemore untouched paradise. In fact, the nature all too soon felt the effects ofthousands of holiday-makers traveling through the forest land. Ancient tacksbecame major routes for the walkers, with the consequent exploitation ofprecious trees and plants.
Notonly the environment of a country can suffer from the sudden growth of tourism. The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The one-time farmer is now theservant of some multi-national organization; he is no longer his own master.Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited. Nodoubt he wonders whether he wasn’t happier in his village working his own land.
Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards thosecountries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and thecreation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in factobtain financial support form tourist companies. At the same time, tourists arebeing encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also itspeople.
Theway tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that ofthe countries we all want to visit. Their needs and problems are more importantthan those of the tourist companies. Increased understanding in planningworld-wide tourism can preserve the market for these companies. If not, in afew years’ time the very things that attract tourists now may well have beendestroyed.

For those whomake journeys across the world, the speed of travel today has turned thecountries into a series of villages. Distances between them appear no greaterto a modern traveler than those which once faced men as they walked fromvillage to village. Jet planes fly people from one end of the earth to theother, allowing them a freedom of movement undreamt of a hundred years ago.
Yet some peoplewonder if the revolution in travel has gone too far. A price has been paid, theysay, for the conquest (征服) of time and distance. Travel is something to be enjoyed, notendured (忍受). Theboat offers leisure and time enough to appreciate the ever-changing sights andsounds of a journey. A journey by train also has a special charm about it.Lakes and forests and wild, open plains sweeping past your carriage windowcreate a grand view in which time and distance mean nothing. On board a plane, however, there is just the blank blue of the sky filling the narrow windows ofthe airplane. The soft lighting, in-flight films and gentle music make up theonly world you know, and the hours progress slowly.
Then there isthe time spent being“processed”at a modem airport. People are conveyed like robots along walkways;baggage is weighed, tickets produced, examined and produced yet again beforethe passengers move to another waiting area. Journeys by rail and sea takelonger, yes, but the hours devoted to being “processed” at departure andarrival in airports are luckily absent. No wonder, then, that the modernhigh-speed trains are winning back passengers from the airlines.
Man, however, isnow a world traveler and cannot turn his back on the airplane. The workinglives of too many people depend upon it; whole new industries have been builtaround its design and operation. The holiday-maker, too, with limited time tospend, patiently endures the busy airports and the limited space of the flightto gain those extra hours and even days, relaxing in the sun. Speed controlspeople’s lives; time saved, in work or play, is the important thing—or so weare told. Perhaps those first horsemen, riding free across the wild, openplains, were enjoying a better world than the one we know today. They couldtravel at will, and the clock was not their master.
71.What does the writer try to express in Paragraph 1?
A. Travel byplane has speeded up the growth of villages.
B. The speed ofmodern travel has made distances relatively short,
C. The freedomof movement has helped people realize their dreams.
D. Man has beenfond of traveling rather than staying in one place.

A. By givinginstructions.
B. By analyzingcause and effect.
C. By followingthe order of time.
D. By givingexamples.
73. According to Paragraph 3, passengers are turning back to modemhigh-speed trains because ______.
A. they payless for the tickets
B. they feelsafer during the travel
C. they ranenjoy higher speed of travel
D. they don’thave to waste time being “processed”
74.What does the last sentence of the passage mean?
A. They enjoytree and relaxing travel.
B. They neededthe clock to tell the time.
C. Theypreferred traveling on horseback.
D. They couldtravel with their master.
75.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Air travelbenefits people and industries.

【听力原文】
M: We are glad to have Dr.Garfield to talk to us today about dreams. Let me start by asking the firstquestion. Does every one dream?
W: It appears that everyone does.Mostly when people say that they never dream, what they really mean is thatthey don’t remember their dreams or they don’t think their dreams areimportant. The reason behind is that they might have been made one with a childwhen they first report their dreams or it was so frightening that they justturned off dreaming completely. The other day someone named Davis came to meand said that he used to be a great dreamer, but suddenly he stopped havingdreams. I asked him what had happened. It turned out that his brother died of aheart attack and he never expected that such a terrible thing would happen to ayoung person. Generally, when they are with some frightening events and dreamabout it was too terrible, people prefer not to dream about it. Actually, theworst thing you can do is stop dreaming, because it means that the badexperience was too painful to even appear in dreams. As long as you aredreaming about it and even if the dreams are frightening, your mind is workingon it. My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal withour problems. We see certain patterns take place in dreams. When a person ishurt deep inside, when a person is seriously ill, or when a person has beenreally sad, if people turn off their dreams totally, it means they don’t allowthemselves to even think about it.

The garden citywas largely the invention of Ebenezer Howard (1850 – 1928). After immigratingfrom England to the USA, and an unsuccessful attempt to make a living as afarmer, he moved to Chicago, where he saw the reconstruction of the city afterthe disastrous fire of 1871. In those days, it was nicknamed “the Garden City”,almost certainly the source of Howard’s name for his later building plan oftowns. Returning to London, Howard developed his design in the 1880s and 1890s,drawing on ideas that were popular at the time, but creating a uniquecombination of designs.
Thenineteenth-century poor city was in many ways a terrible place, dirty andcrowded; but it offered economic and social opportunities. At the same time, the British countryside was in fact equally unattractive: though it promisedfresh air and nature, it suffered from agricultural depression(萧条) and it offered neitherenough work and wages, nor much social life. Howard’s idea was to combine the bestof town and country in a new kind of settlement, the garden city. Howard’s ideawas that a group of people should set up a company, borrowing money toestablish a garden city in the depressed countryside; far enough from existingcities to make sure that the land was bought at the bottom price.
Garden citieswould provide a central public open space, radial avenues and connectingindustries. They would be surrounded by a much larger area of green belt, alsoowned by the company, containing not merely farms but also some industrialinstitutions. As more and more people moved in, the garden city would reach itsplanned limit-Howard suggested 32,000 people; then, another would be started ashort distance away. Thus, over time, there would develop a vast planned housecollection, extending almost without limit; within it, each garden city wouldoffer a wide rang of jobs and services, but each would also be connected to theothers by a rapid transportation system, thus giving all the economic andsocial opportunities of a big city.
66. How did Howard get the name for his building plan of gardencities?
A. Through hisobservation of the country life.
B. Through thecombination of different ideas.
C. By takingother people’s advice.
D. By using thenickname of the reconstructed Chicago.

68.According to Howard, garden cities should be built ______.
A. as far aspossible from existing cities
B. in thecountryside where the land was cheap
C. in thecountryside where agriculture was developed
D. near citieswhere employment opportunities already existed

Why shouldmankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring andresearching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources bespent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questionsthat, understandably, are very often asked.
Perhaps the bestanswer lies in our genetic makeup(基因构成)as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the treesinto the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider thespread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reasonfor exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.
Nearly everysuccessful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers insurrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we maybe completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen itseffects.
Exploration alsoallows minerals and other potential(潜在的)resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physicalpossessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length orquality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin-offsincluding improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weatherforecasting and in communications systems. Even non-stick pans and mirroredsunglasses are by-products(副产品)of technological developments in the space industry!
While manyresources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of spaceallows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on whatmay serve to save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of howthe universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The dangerexists, but knowledge can help human being to survive. Without the ability toreach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist.
While Earth isthe only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humanswould allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would bedifferent, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surelycould in the future.

A. To expresshis doubts.
B. To comparedifferent ideas.

A. Humans arenature-born to do so.
B. Humans havethe tendency to fight.

D. Humans don’tlike to stay in the same place.
73. The underlined word “spin-offs” in Paragraph 4 probably refersto ______.
A. survivalchances
B. potentialresources
C. unexpectedbenefits
D. physicalpossessions
74.What makes it possible for humans to live on other planets?
A. Our geneticmakeup.
B. Resources onthe earth.
C. The adaptiveability of humans.
D. By-productsin space exploration.
75.Which of the statements can best sum up the passage?

Kong Zi, alsocalled Confucius (551-479 B.C), and Socrates (469-399
B. C) lived onlya hundred years apart, and during their lifetimes there was no contact betweenChina and Greece, but it is interesting to look at how the world that each ofthese great philosophers came from shaped their ideas, and how these ideas inturn ,shaped their societies.
Neitherphilosopher lived in times of peace, though there were more wars in Greece than in China. The Chinese states were very large and feudal, while the Greek city-stateswere small and urban. The urban environment in which Socrates lived allowed himto be more radical than Confucius. Unlike Confucius, Socrates was not asked byrules how to govern effectively. Thus, Socrates was able to be more idealistic, focusing on issues like freedom, and knowledge for its own sake. Confucius, onthe other hand, advised those in government service, and many of his studentswent out to government service.
Confuciussuggested the Golden Rule as a principle for the conduct of life:” Do not do toothers what you would not want others to do to you.” He assumed that all menwere equal at birth, though some bad more potential than others, and that itwas knowledge that set men apart. Socrates focused on the individual, and thoughtthat the greatest purpose of man was to seek wisdom. He believed that thesuperior class should rule the inferior(下层的)classes.
For Socrates, the family was of no importance, and the community of little concern. ForConfucius, however, the family was the centre of the society, with familyrelations considered much more important than political relations.
Both men arerespected much more today than they were in their lifetimes.
64. Which of the following is TUREaccording to the first paragraph?

B. Confucius had much influence on Socrates’ ideas.
C. The societies ware influenced by the philosophers’ ideas.
D. There were cultural exchanges between China and Greece.

A. all men were equal when they were born
B. the lower classed should be ruled by the upper class
C. the purpose of man was to seek freedom and wisdom
66. What made some people different fromothers according to Confucius?
A. Family.
B. Potential.
C. Knowledge.
D. Community.
67. This passage is organized in thepattern of ______.
A. time and events
B. comparison and contrast
C. cause and effect
D. definition and classification
【答案及解析】

65.B 判断推理题。根据第三段的最后一句“Like Confucius, he believed that thesuperior class should rule the inferior classes.”可知B选项正确。
66.C 细节判断题。根据文章第三段第三句中的“it was knowledge that set menapart.”可以判断出答案。

Moderninventions have speeded up people’s lives amazingly. Motor-cars cover a hundredmiles in little more than an hour. Aircraft cross the world a day, whilecomputers operate at lightning speed.Indeed, this love of speed seems never-ending. Every year motor-carsare produced which go even faster each new computer boasts(吹嘘)of saving precious secondsin handling tasks.
All this savestime, but at a price. When we lose or gain half a day in speeding across theworld in an airplane, our bodies tell us so. We get the uncomfortable feelingknown as jet-lag; our bodies feel that they have been left behind in anothertime zone. Again, spending too long at computers results in painful wrist andfingers. Mobile phones also have their dangers, according to some scientists;too much use may transmit harmful radiation into our brains, a consequence wedo not like to think about.
However, what do we do with the time we have saved? Certainly not relax or soit seems. We are so accustomed to constant activity that we find it difficultto sit and do nothing or even just one thing at a time. Perhaps the daysare long gone when we might listen quietly to a story on the radio, lettingimaginations take us into another world.
There was a timewhen some people’s lives were devoted simply to the cultivation of the land orthe care of cattle. No multi-tasking there; their lives went on at a muchgentler pace, and in a familiar pattern. There is much that we might envy abouta way of life like this. Yet before we do so, we must think of the hard tasksour ancestors faced; they farmed with bare hands, often lived close to hunger, and had to fashion tools from wood and stone. Modern machinery has freed peoplefrom that primitive existence.

A. our love ofspeed seems never-ending
B. time islimited
C. the pricesare increasingly high
D. themanufacturers boast a lot

70.What is the author’s attitude towards the modern technology?
A. Critical
B. Objective
C. Optimistic
D. Negative
71.What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. The presentand past times
B. Machineryand human beings

Every day weexperience one of the wonders of the world around us without even realizing it.It is not the amazingcomplexity of television, nor the impressive technology of transport. Theuniversal wonder we share and experience is our ability to make noises with ourmouths, and so transmit ideas and thoughts to each other’s minds. This abilitycomes so naturally that we tend to forget what a miracle (奇迹) it is.
Obviously, theability to talk is something that marks humans off from animals. Of course, some animals have powers just as amazing. Birds can fly thousands of miles byobserving positions of the stars in the sky in relation to the time of day andyear. In Nature’s talent show, humans are a species of animal that havedeveloped their own special act. If we reduce it to basic terms, it’s anability for communicating information to others, by varying sounds we make aswe breathe out.
Not that we don’thave other powers of communication. Our facial expressions convey our emotions, such as anger, or joy, or disappointment. The way we hold our heads canindicate to others whether we are happy or sad. This is so-called “body language”. Bristling (直立的) fur is an unmistakablewarning of attack among many animals. Similarly, the bowed head or droopingtail shows a readiness to take second place in any animal gathering.
Such a means ofcommunication is a basic mechanism that animals, including human beings, instinctively acquire and display. Is the ability to speak just another sort ofinstinct? If so, how did human beings acquire this amazing skill? Biologistscan readily indicate that particular area of our brain where speech mechanismsfunction, but this doesn’t tell us how that part of our bodies originated inour biological history.
72. According to the passage, the wonder we take for granted is______.
A. our abilityto use language
B. the miracleof technology
C. our abilityto make noises with mouth
D. the amazingpower of nature
73.What feature of“body language”mentioned in the passage is common to both humans and animals?
A. Liftingheads when sad.
B. Keeping longfaces when angry.
C. Bowing headswhen willing to obey.
D. Bristlinghair when ready to attack.
74.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. Body languageis unique to humans.
B. Animalsexpress emotions just as humans do.
C. Humans areno different from animals to some degree.
D. Humans don’thave other powers of communication.
75.This passage is mainly about ______.
A. thedevelopment of body language
B. the specialrole humans play in nature
C. thedifference between humans and animals in language use
D. the power toconvey information to others

The surprisingexperiment I am about to describe proves that air is all around you and that itpresses down upon you. Air pressure is a wonderful force. When you swimunderwater, you can feel water push down your body. The air all around you doesthe same. However, your body is so used to it that you do not notice this. Thepressure is caused by a layer of air called the atmosphere. This layersurrounds the Earth, extending to about five kilometers above the Earth’ssurface.
The followingexperiment is an easy one that you can do at home. But make sure that you aresupervised, because you will need to use matches. Now for the experiment!
What you need
·Ahard-boiled egg without the shell
·Abottle with a neck slightly smaller than the egg
·Apiece of paper
·Amatch
Method
1. Check that the egg will sit firmly onthe neck of the bottle.
2. Tear the paper into strips and put thestrips into the bottle.
3. Light the paper by dropping a burningmatch into the bottle.
4. Quickly sit the egg on the neck of thebottle.
Result
Astonishingly, the egg will be sucked into the bottle. Your friends will be amazed when youshow them the experiment. But be careful when you handle matches.
Why it happened
As the paperburns, it needs oxygen and uses up the oxygen (air) in the bottle. The egg acts as a seal in the neck of the bottle, sono more air can get inside. This reduces the air pressure inside the bottle. The air pressure must equalize, so more air from outside must enter the bottle. The outside air pressure against the egg and then the egg is pushed into thebottle! The provesthat air is all around and that it is pressing down on us.
60.Why is there the need to take care when you are doing the experiment?
A. The bottlecould break.
B. You need tolight the paper with a match.
C. The eggneeds to be shelled.

61.In the experiment, the burning inside the bottle can ______.
A. equalize theair pressure inside and outside
B. make a sealin the neck of the bottle
C. finish upthe oxygen inside the bottle
D. produce moreoxygen inside the bottle
62.How did the egg put into the bottle?
A. The oxygeninside the bottle sucked the egg in.
B. It becamesoft without the shell.
C. The neck ofthe bottle was wide enough.
D. The outsideair pressure forced it into the bottle.
63.The experiment is carried out to prove ______.
A. water pusheson your body when you swim underwater.
B. the earth issurrounded by a layer of air called the atmosphere.
C. the pressureof air around us has a powerful force.
D. the airpressure is not equalized around us.

Many peoplewrite to newspapers and magazines to express their opinions. Letters to theeditor must carry the writer’s full name, address and telephone number, although the information is not necessary for publication. This requirement toprovide personal particulars is a clear indication that writers are heldresponsible for what they say. When a writer wants his voice heard. He needs toclaim ownership of his voice. Responsibility is the name of the game.
“People today prefer living together to putting their signatures on amarriage certificate because they refuse to accept responsibility for therelationship, ” said social worker Ken Yip, “and this is what is causing a lotof family problems.” When we sign a paper, for example, a business contract ora bank document, the signature is seal of consent, an agreement to take thematter seriously. Most governments and many organizations will not processwritten complaints if they do not bear the writer’s signature. The absence of asignature, they explain, tells us that the writer cannot be too serious andtherefore does not deserve a reply.
There are peoplewho wish to remain anonymous(匿名的)for various reasons. Multi-billionaire Mr King donates generously tocharity several times a year. He gives simply because he wants to help but notfor the publicity his donations may bring, and he does not want his good deedsto make news. In other cases, people insist on anonymity because they areafraid of the consequences of revealing their identity. Crime witnesses may bewilling to assist the police, but most are unwilling to give their names whenreporting a crime.(www.nmet168.com)
Name or no name? The answer is very personaland lies in how much we want to get involved. We all have a name. It is amatter if responsibility to it when we make a statement, a claim or anaccusation. We all want to honour our own name, and it is only by stamping ourexpression of an opinion with our own name that we honour what we say.
68. What does the writer mean by saying “Responsibility is the nameof the game”?
A. Writers needto provide their personal information in the game.
B. Publicationmust bear the writer’s full name, address and phone number.
C. Writersshould be responsible for their names.
D. Names arerequired to indicate writers’ responsibility for what they say.

D. become afamily problem

Newarchaeological discoveries suggest that trade between Europe and Asia along the Silk Road probably began in some form many countries earlier than once thought. The findings, coupled with a widening range of scientific and historicalresearch could add a fascinating new page to the epic of the Silk Road.
The latest andmost surprising discovery is pieces of silk found in the hair of an Egyptianmummy from about 1000 BC, long before regular traffic on the Silk Road and atleast one thousand years before silk was previously thought to be used in Egypt. Other research may extend human activity along this route back even further, perhapsa million years to the migration of human ancestors into eastern Asia.
The officialorigin of East-West commerce along the road is usually placed in the late 2ndcentury BC when an agent of the Chinese Emperor Wu-di returned from a dangeroussecret mission(使命)acrossthe western desert into the remote high country of Central Asia. The agent,Zhang Qian, travelled as far as Afghanistan and brought back knowledge of evenmore distant lands such as Persia, Syria and a place known as Lijien, perhaps Rome. Historians have called this one of the most important journeys in ancient times. Hisjourney opened the way for what have been thought to be the first indirectcontacts between the ancient world’s two superpowers, China and Rome. Chinese silk, first traded to central Asian tribes for war horses and to theParthians of old Pet la lu exchange for acrobats and ostrich eggs, was soonfinding its way through a network of merchants to the luxury markets in Rome.
But the newdiscoveries show that Chinese silk was apparently present in the West longbefore the Han emperor started organized trade over the Silk Road. The researchcould change thinking about the early history of world trade and provideinsights into the mystery of just how and when Europe and the Mediterraneanlands first became aware of the glorious culture at the other end of Eurasia.
72. The word “coupled” in the first paragraph could best be replacedby ______.
