《综合教程(第2版)》(何兆熊主编、上海外语教育出版社出版)是“十二五”普通高等教育国家规划教材,众多院校都把它作为英语专业学生使用的精读课教材。但由于该教材信息量大,知识面宽,具有一定的广度和深度,这给学生在学习该教材的过程中带来一定的困难。为了帮助学生更好地学习这套教材,我们有针对性地编著了它的配套辅导用书。

2.collapse [kE5lAps] v. a) to fall down inward suddenly倒塌,崩溃:The collapse of the bridgeforced the ferry back into operation.桥跨了,只好又使用渡船。b) a sudden failure in the way something works, sothat it cannot continue垮台,失败:His business was in danger ofcollapse.他的生意面临倒闭的危险。

5.strive [straiv] v. to struggle or fight forcefully与…奋斗,抗争,搏斗:The swimmer was striving against the current.游泳者正在和激浪搏斗。
6.distress [dis5tres] n. a) anxiety or mental suffering巨大的悲痛,不幸,危难:Send out a distresssignal; the ship is sinking.发出求救信号吧, 船正在下沉。b)a feeling of extreme unhappiness悲痛, 痛苦, 忧伤, 苦恼:Nothing could alleviate hisdistress.什么都不能减轻他的痛苦。
7.exile [5eksail, 5e^z-] n. enforced removal fromone’s native country放逐,充军,流放:Napoleon was sent into exile on an island.拿破仑被流放到一个岛上。
8.uphold [Qp5hEuld] v. a) to raise or support支持,维护:We will loyally uphold theprinciples of the United Nations.我们将忠实地维护联合国的原则。b) if a court upholds a decision made by anothercourt, it states that the decision was correct维持,确认(原判、裁决等):The conviction wasupheld by the Court of Appeal.地方法院坚持原判决。
9.dignity [5di^niti] n. the quality or state of being worthy ofesteem or respect品格高尚,高贵,尊贵:Although she is very poor, she has not lost her dignity.她虽然很穷,但没有失去她的尊严。
10.lofty [5lC(:)fti]adj. a) elevated in character, exalted品德高尚的,崇高的:Young people shouldhave lofty ideals and aims.年轻人应该有崇高的理想和目标。b) very high and impressive高耸的,极高的:The Alps mountains, lofty and rugged, stood like an impassable wallbefore him巍峨崎岖的阿尔卑斯山,像一座无法越过的高墙屹立在他面前。
11.endure [in5djuE] v. a) to carry on through, despite hardships忍耐,忍受:I cannot endure herrudeness any longer.我再也不能忍受她的无礼了。b) to remain alive or continue to exist for a longtime持续, 持久, 坚持下去:We can't endure much longerin the desert without water.我们没有水无法在沙漠中坚持长久。
12.perish [5periF] v. a)to pass from existence, disappear gradually凋谢,毁灭,消亡:Hundreds of sheep perished that yearbecause of drought.那年由于干旱, 几百头羊突然死去。b) if rubber or leather perishes, it decays损坏,腐烂:Continuous washing hasperished the rubber.不断地洗涤使橡皮筋失去弹性。
13.supplant [sE5plB:nt] v. to displace andsubstitute for another排挤掉,代替:In most offices, the typewriter has now been supplanted by thecomputer.当今许多办公室里, 打字机已被电脑取代。
